Hand in Hand (2018-2019)

Photo: Still from Video 1 (2018).

Hand in Hand.

Time: Until the audience member exits.

The performer stands silent, in an empty room, hands by their side. Audience members are invited to slap the performer, not specifying which part of the body. The performer remains neutral to the situation and takes any slaps with no repercussion. The performance ends when the audience members decide, when they exit.

Hand in Hand is about exploring the relationship of the viewer and performer. It puts focus on the viewers feelings, with the aim to make them feel uncomfortable. A key word. It is ironic that the focus is on the audience feeling this way, when the performer itself is probably feeling uncomfortable as they are being slapped in the face.

In fact, the artist is comfortable. The secondary performer – the slap giver – is a trusted friend of the artist. The performance has also been rehearsed several times. Although each time is somewhat different, the concept is the same, and so it is more comforting knowing what is coming.

Additionally to this, the artist is comfortable due to her past. Having been in several abusive relationships, there is little fear surrounding being hit. This however makes the physical process of being hit fine, but mentally, the artist suffers, hit with memories of her past.

Exploration of the project

This project has been explored from 2018-2019 and is still on-going.

The performance has been performed many times. In front of live audiences at the Performance Now event and at the Sion Hill studio (video 1) for the camera. It has also been performed live with no documentation and with the use of several face-casts of the artist.

The subsequent video’s and photograph’s have been shown to audiences at crits, tutorials and have received a variety of feedback, but mainly stating that this piece is better shown via video than live, due to its nature.

A final recording will be made of this piece in May 2019, and will be shown at the Bath Spa University Degree Show in June 2019, alongside the props used.

Photo still from a live performance of Hand in Hand, at the Performance Now event in 2019.

This time the performer was slapped with a cast replica of her face, in front of a live audience. Only photographs were taken to question if they can accurately represent the entire performance, and to look into the act of selection.
